Online Master of Business Administration in Marketing

The following Master of Business Administration program with specialization in Marketing (MBA/MKT) is offered at these University of Phoenix campus locations: Puerto Rico and Online.

The MBA/MKT program is designed to meet the needs of a broad but unique population - the working adult manager or supervisor who could benefit from a graduate business education. Because the tools of the marketing science are applicable to the problems of the public sector as well as the private sector, students whose career interests involve not-for-profit enterprise are also encouraged to seek admission. The MBA/MKT program requires a practical background in business, and the successful candidate will have a least three years of relevant experience.

The various components of the program- curriculum, learning resources, and faculty- have been selected to produce specified outcomes. These outcomes, while reflecting contemporary academic practice, also focus on the functional competencies required of working managers. Thus, the MBA/MKT program emphasizes the identification, analysis, and design of marketing strategies that require technical understanding and balanced decision making. Although a functional knowledge of managerial economics, accounting, finance, quantitative analysis, and human resources management underlies the program, equal attention is given to the development of report writing, oral reporting, and group processing skills.

Students develop additional expertise in the solution of persistent marketing management problems through the completion of a research project which relates the student's professional interests or responsibilities to the goal of improved marketing strategies. The research project in marketing, therefore, serves not only to provide a vehicle for the application of theory to practice, but also serves to demonstrate that the MBA/MKT candidate can perform in a variety of sophisticated management roles with the confidence and self-discipline expected of the MBA/MKT program graduate.

The program involves a variety of learning formats, depending upon the subject matter and competencies, to be developed. These formats include lecture, seminar, team teaching, and self-directed learning.

The MBA/MKT program has a 46-credit requirement. All course work must be satisfactorily completed prior to taking the Research Project in Marketing.

Research Project in Marketing - Marketing Business Plan

One of the major program activities for the MBA/MKT degree is the successful completion of a research project in the form of a Marketing Business Plan. The Marketing Business Plan must satisfy the requirements established for its presentation, procedure theoretical framework development, and content analysis. The Marketing Business Plan will reflect the student's ability to apply the knowledge, experiences and skills relevant to the solution of a specific business problem. The MBA Marketing Business Plan, begun in the Marketing Research Seminar (MKT 579) and completed in the Research Project in Marketing (MKT 582), is an exercise in practical, professional marketing and planning. It allows for the synthesis and integration of theory and practice developed throughout the student's graduate program in business and marketing, and to apply that learning and experience toward the solution of "real" business problems or situations in his or her place of employment, relative to his or her discipline in the graduate business program. The managerial business plan provides the opportunity for the student to demonstrate his or her specific applied knowledge, skill, and professional development relating to the aggregate curriculum and will result in the following:

1. Review an organization or current business situation.
2. Identify and develop a situation statement requiring a formal Management Business Plan.
3. Identify specific company activities/functions affected by Marketing Business Plan.
4. Identify and utilize primary (proprietary) and secondary (public) sources of information relevant to the business situation being studied.
5. Process the foundational components contributing to the preparation of a formal marketing business plan.
6. Prepare a formal Marketing Business Plan.
